Frequently Asked Questions
STORYTELLING + PHOTOGRAPHY for NONPROFITS
We struggle using photographs in ways that create impact and get engagement. Can you help with that?
Absolutely.
I am a picture editor, as well as a photographer, and have learned great results are the outcome of thorough planning, a smart process, and thoughtful picture selection.
Let’s talk about the audience you want to reach, the emotions to engage, the communication channels that make sense, and the actions you want your audience to take. Clarity around those things will bring clarity around the pictures that will work best.
Do you ever consider working for free … in exchange for photo credit and social media exposure?
It’s hard for me to say no to that because this work matters deeply to me … but the reality is I do not.
Projects are priced on a cost-plus basis. It’s the best I can do to make this as affordable as possible.
How can we control costs so we can afford to work together?
I am very low maintenance, so there’s that. :-)
Typically I stay in facilities you provide, eat meals with you and your team, and travel with you (or in a vehicle you provide). By working with resources you already have available expenses stay low.
My only concerns are for health and safety, since (obviously) I can’t be productive if I’m sick, or if my gear is stolen.
How many photos will we receive?
I typically shoot hundreds to thousands of photographs on assignment. From those, I edit to a varied collection of the best images.
Every assignment is different, but you can expect a generous collection of photographs that gives you plenty of options for achieving the goals we identified in our planning sessions.
How quickly are photos delivered once you’ve completed your work?
We’ll agree in advance on specific time frames, so you have what you need, when you need it.
Barring any particular urgency, you can expect to see a review edit within roughly 15 days of my returning home.
Once you’ve made your selections, final images will be delivered as they are finished.
Why would any NPO choose to not work with you?
Hmmm. Nothing comes to mind. ;-))
